Customisation, is key!
You’re building a NEW home, so make it work for you! This is your chance to tailor your house to your needs, every room can be functional and economical for you and your family.
Look at the floor-plan… What works? What doesn’t?
Lets start with the entrance.
Do you love a sense of space and openness? Then customise your entrance and entrance hall to be that little bit wider, it makes such a difference and impact when you first enter the home. Also allows for additional furniture like hats stands, shoe boxes or even a bench seat. It creates a great first impression and gives a hint of grandeur.
Flowing into your family/living/dining/kitchen what do you want for you and the family..? A lounge for yourself and one for the kids? Or a rumpus for games time? Do you want the main feature to be the kitchen or an amazing outdoor entertaining area?
These are all key questions!
So, the family areas are an important place to get right. Do you need maximum storage for DVD’s, books, games? Then customise built in cabinetry into the living space, work it round your TV to create the ultimate home entrainment unit. Draws are handy to hide the unsightly things like extension chords remotes and instruction manuals whereas shelves are great to display keepsakes, photos and books.
Also think about the size of your family room, if your going to be spending a majority of your time there and on the couch with the family, maximise the space to cater for that big comfy couch or armchair. Theres nothing worse than getting into a new home a realising your couch overwhelms the space or is not configured right, it will throw off the flow of the whole space.
The kitchen needs to complement the other main spaces in the home. Keep the cabinetry consistent in colour with your built in units, and create your splash of impact with your choice in bench top. Again, storage is obviously key in a kitchen, so do you need a butlers pantry?! Sounds fancy, but it’s becoming a common feature in new builds. A butlers pantry is great for functionality! You can keep the toaster, kettle, microwave all out on the bench for easy everyday use… But close the door for a seamless looking kitchen!
Other customisations can include the size of your wardrobes… Are you or your kids clothes fiends? Your linen cupboard… Do you need to make it a double, catering for extra towels, sheet sets etc? Your bathroom… Make it that little bigger to easily fit a washing basket or towel rack?
Study areas, make maximum use of cupboards in this space, you can NEVER have to much storage!
So write a list, jot down the things about your current home that you would change/improve and make those changes for the ultimate new home. Plan each room/space/cupboard to YOUR needs.
